About the hash generator

Generate SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 hashes of any text. Useful for checking that two strings are identical, building cache keys, or reproducing a checksum an API expects. Hashing uses the standard Web Crypto API.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the Input Text box.

Questions

Why is there no MD5 option?
The browser's Web Crypto API deliberately does not implement MD5, and this tool only uses that API. MD5 is broken for security purposes, so SHA-256 is the better choice for anything new.
Is MD5 or SHA-1 secure?
No. Practical collision attacks exist for both, so neither should be used for signatures or integrity checks against an attacker. SHA-256 and SHA-512 have no known practical attacks.
Can a hash be reversed back to the original text?
Not mathematically, but short or common inputs can be found by guessing and comparing hashes. That is why passwords need a slow, salted algorithm like bcrypt rather than a plain SHA hash.
Why does my hash differ from another tool's?
Usually invisible whitespace: a trailing newline or space changes the hash completely. This tool hashes the text as UTF-8 exactly as typed, including any trailing newline.
