Palette Generator

About the palette generator

Pick one base colour and generate a complementary, analogous, triadic, tetradic or monochromatic palette from it. The palettes are built by rotating the hue on the colour wheel, or by stepping lightness for monochromatic, keeping saturation the same. Click any swatch to copy its hex code.

How to use it

  1. Choose a base colour with the picker or type a hex code.
  2. Select a palette type from the dropdown.
  3. Click a swatch or its hex code to copy it.
  4. Try other palette types to compare options from the same base.

Questions

What is a complementary color?
The colour directly opposite on the colour wheel, 180 degrees away in hue. Complementary pairs give the strongest contrast.
What is the difference between analogous and triadic colors?
Analogous colours sit next to each other, 30 degrees either side of the base here, and feel harmonious. Triadic colours are spaced evenly 120 degrees apart and feel more vibrant.
What is a tetradic color scheme?
Four colours spaced 90 degrees apart on the wheel, forming two complementary pairs. It gives the most variety but is harder to balance.
How is a monochromatic palette made?
It keeps the hue and saturation of your base colour and changes only lightness, here at 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%.
