About the stopwatch and timer
A stopwatch with lap splits and a countdown timer on one page. Both run in your browser and read the system clock rather than counting ticks, so they stay accurate when you switch tabs or lock the screen for a moment. The countdown beeps at zero and can also send a desktop notification.
How to use it
- Press Start on the stopwatch; press Lap to record a split without stopping it.
- Press Stop to pause, then Resume to continue or Reset to clear the laps.
- For the countdown, type hours, minutes and seconds or tap a preset, then press Start.
- Tap “Also notify me when it ends” if you want a notification as well as the beep.
Questions
- Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?
- Yes. Browsers slow down background timers, but this page calculates elapsed time from the system clock, so the display is correct as soon as you come back. The end-of-countdown beep may arrive a second or so late in a background tab.
- What is the difference between a split and the total on a lap?
- The split is the time since the previous lap; the total is the time since the stopwatch started. Runners usually compare splits, while the total is your overall time.
- Why don't I hear the beep?
- Check that your device isn't muted. On phones, silent mode can mute web audio, and some browsers only allow sound after you have tapped a button on the page, which pressing Start does.
- Does it work offline?
- Once the page has loaded, yes. Nothing is sent to a server while it runs.
