About the microphone test
Test your microphone before a call or recording. Talk and watch the live level meter and waveform, then record a 5 or 10 second clip and play it back to hear how you sound. Everything runs in your browser; the audio is not uploaded.
How to use it
- Press “Start microphone test” and choose Allow when asked.
- Speak normally and watch the level meter and waveform move.
- Pick a different microphone from the menu if you have more than one.
- Choose 5s or 10s and press “Record a test clip”.
- Play the clip back to check volume and clarity.
Questions
- How do I know if my microphone is working?
- Start the test and speak. If the level bar and waveform move with your voice, the browser is receiving sound from the microphone. If they stay flat, try another device from the menu or check the mute switch on your headset.
- What level should my microphone be at?
- Normal speech should move the bar to around the middle. If it regularly hits the right-hand end, the input is clipping and will sound distorted; move back from the mic or lower its input gain in your system sound settings.
- What does dB mean on the meter?
- The meter shows level in decibels relative to full scale (dBFS). 0 dB is the loudest signal the input can carry and lower numbers are quieter; silence is shown as “silent” rather than a number.
- Is my recording saved or uploaded?
- No. The test clip is kept in your browser's memory only so you can play it back, and it is discarded when you leave the page.
