About the text to speech

Have any text read aloud using the speech voices built into your browser and operating system. Choose a voice, adjust speed, pitch and volume, and follow along as each word is highlighted where the voice supports it. It uses the Web Speech API, so it is free and needs no account; the voices on offer depend on your device and browser.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste text into the box.
  2. Pick a voice from the list.
  3. Set speed, pitch and volume with the sliders.
  4. Press Play; use Pause, Resume and Stop to control playback.

Questions

Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. The Web Speech API sends audio straight to your speakers and does not give web pages access to the sound, so no browser-based tool using it can save a file.
Why are the voices different on my phone and my computer?
The list comes from your operating system and browser. Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS each ship different voices, and some browsers add online voices of their own.
Why isn't the current word highlighted?
Highlighting relies on word boundary events, which not every browser or voice sends. Many online voices, and some browsers, report none.
Is my text sent anywhere?
This site does not receive it. Voices marked as online may be processed by your browser vendor's speech service; local voices run on your device.
