About the webcam test

Check that your camera works before a video call, interview or stream. The test shows a live preview and reports the resolution and frame rate your browser actually negotiated with the camera, which is often lower than the number on the box. It runs in your browser: the video is never recorded or uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Press “Start camera test”.
  2. Choose Allow when your browser asks for camera access.
  3. Check the preview, resolution and frame rate.
  4. If you have more than one camera, switch between them with the Camera menu.
  5. Press “Snapshot (PNG)” to save a still frame.

Questions

Why does it say my camera is blocked?
The browser has been told not to share the camera with this site. Click the lock or camera icon at the left of the address bar, set Camera to Allow and reload the page. On a phone, also check the browser's camera permission in system settings.
Why does my camera show “could not be started”?
Usually another app or browser tab already has the camera open, such as Zoom, Teams or FaceTime. Close it and try again. Some laptops also have a privacy shutter or a keyboard key that turns the camera off.
Why is my webcam resolution lower than advertised?
The camera, the USB connection and the browser agree on a mode together, and many cameras drop resolution or frame rate in low light or over slower USB ports. The figures shown are what the browser reports for the running stream.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview is drawn directly from your camera on this page, and snapshots are saved straight to your device.
Why is my image mirrored?
Mirroring is on by default because it feels natural, like looking in a mirror. It only affects this preview and your snapshot; turn it off with the Mirror button.
