About the typing speed test
A typing speed test using random common English words. Choose 15, 30 or 60 seconds; the clock starts on your first keystroke. It shows words per minute and accuracy live, marks mistakes in red as you go, and gives a summary at the end. It runs in your browser and works with a phone keyboard.
How to use it
- Pick a length: 15, 30 or 60 seconds.
- Tap the input box and start typing the passage shown above it.
- Fix mistakes with backspace if you like; wrong characters are highlighted until you do.
- When time runs out, read your result and press Try again for a new passage.
Questions
- How is WPM calculated?
- By the standard convention: every five correctly typed characters, spaces included, count as one word, divided by the minutes elapsed. Incorrect characters do not count toward your speed.
- How is accuracy calculated?
- It is the share of characters in your current input that match the passage. Correcting a mistake with backspace raises your accuracy again.
- What is a good typing speed?
- Around 40 WPM is a common average for adults who type regularly; 60–80 WPM is fast for everyday work. Accuracy matters as much as speed, since errors cost time to fix.
- Can I take the test on my phone?
- Yes. It uses a normal text box, so your phone's on-screen keyboard works. Autocorrect is turned off so it cannot change your words for you.
