About the compress
Make an image file smaller by re-encoding it as a JPEG at the quality you choose. Useful before emailing photos, uploading to a site with a size limit, or speeding up a web page. The image is uploaded to our server for compression, and the page shows the original and compressed sizes side by side.
How to use it
- Click the upload area or drop an image onto it.
- Drag the Quality slider (10–100%, default 80%).
- Click Compress Image and compare the original and compressed sizes.
- Click Download to save the smaller JPEG.
Questions
- Does compressing a JPEG reduce quality?
- Yes. JPEG is a lossy format, so every re-encode throws away some detail. Around 70–85% is usually hard to tell apart from the original at normal viewing size; very low settings show blocky artefacts.
- Can I compress a PNG with a transparent background?
- This tool always outputs JPEG, and JPEG has no transparency, so transparent areas will not survive. For a logo or graphic that needs transparency, resize it smaller instead.
- Why did my compressed file get bigger?
- If the original was already a heavily compressed JPEG, or a small PNG graphic, re-encoding at a high quality setting can produce a larger file. Lower the quality slider and try again, or keep the original.
